Silent Hunter 5 has promise, but this buggy and unstable game needs to be sent back to the drydock for some serious refitting.

Overview
Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic is a submarine simulation game designed for online players. With its amazing underwater warfare design, the simulation game is full of submarine warships and campaign missions. The best thing about Silent Hunter 5 is that the player can act as the boss of a U-boat, inspect his crew and plan his campaign missions. Here is Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic Guide for interested players, who want to explore the exciting underwater combat world. As the PC game requires Internet connection, it is quite challenging for players online as the competition gets addictively tougher!
Gameplay (3 out of 5)
The simulation game features an interesting as well as addictive gameplay. Being a submarine war captain is indeed a wonderful idea, and players would hardly wish to miss that. The Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic Guide follows a simple yet attractive gameplay: it is a submarine simulation game taking players to the exciting world of underwater warships and campaigns. It is about soldiers of the World War II hiding under the waves in a German U-boat, spotting and fighting enemies, shooting torpedoes, and so on. The player gets to play the role of a U-boat captain in this single-player campaign simulation game as well as to involve in one-off historical war missions.
Graphics and Sound (2 out of 5)
The visuals of Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic are designed abruptly on modern world, although its gameplay is primarily based on the period of World War II. This leaves us longing for more authentic World War II scenario that the game seriously lacks. Graphics can be irritating at times when icons turn into white blocks making everything look blurry. Nevertheless, the visuals are okay if not too bad. The simulation game features original soundtrack composed by Jason Graves. The war shoots and thundering sounds could have been better.
Features (3 out of 5)
Silent Hunter 5 is an ideal submarine simulation game. The player will now be able to play and feel as U-boat captain leading his crew from a first person view in the dynamic campaign of this game. Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic Guide will help players go through the gameplay in the tutorial. One of the interesting features of the simulation game is the high level of interactivity. The player can walk through the submarines while accessing every inside and outside part of the U-boat. Interaction of the player with the submarine crew is highly impressive as the player can watch them doing their daily jobs. Moreover, Silent Hunter 5 features amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea with active participation of players in the interesting encounters with strong enemy warships. The player will have more actions influencing the campaign tactics. For instance, the player can adjust dynamically with allied forces, plan his own way to open new locations, and upgrade new possibilities. In other words, it is a very interactive PC game.
Pros and Cons
The best part of Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic is the deep and immersive submarine simulation. There is more room for interaction for the player to plan his warships and campaigns. However, the in-game tutorial and manual is required to be upgraded. Besides, there are design flaws; the submarine simulation is confusing at times. Being an online game, Silent Hunter 5 is challenging enough for players. Above all, the tutorials in Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic Guide need more details.

The stock game's User Interface is cumbersome
The required connection to the internet is a nuisance, but not a deal breaker.
After downloading and installing a few mods, I have an easy to use, powerful User Interface to control my sub that uses the same conventions as SH3 and 4 (it is tweak-able too), I can interact with my crew and issue orders quickly. And best of all, the issue with the 'tap dancing' sounds mentioned by others is gone! I now have a game that I can play and enjoy.
The DRM issue- It is stupid, and insulting, but assuming that your internet connection is stable, fast, and SECURE, the DRM works reasonably well.
With the price drop, some mods, and a dollop of your patience, you can have a pretty good little game.
I've never pirated software in my life. I'm absolutely furious that I paid top $$ for a PC game that won't let me play. This will be the last UBI game I buy unless they change that.
I am hoping that Newegg will let me RMA this absolute garbage.
Firstly I go slide-show if on anything but THE LOWEST graphic setting, and I run two crossfire hd5770s.
The game crashes randomly in many different situations, I' ve="" mysteriously="" ended="" up="" 2="" miles="" inland="" on="" the="" north="" coast="" of="" africa="" after="" just="" having="" left="" the="" dockyards="" in="" denmark.="">
Running in the sub will cause 'tap dancing' where the sound effect of walking on metal will loop over itself endlessly.
And aside from all these technical problems the game just seems silly. The animations are slow and ponderous, the characters are something of a child's creation. The voice acting for both languages is poor and repetative.
and worst of all, the realism and atmosphere that was the hallmark of the series has all but vanished in favour of an almost comical 'FPS meets RPG meets hollywood action movie meets uboat' format.
Not 'always on' internet connection? No play.
Product Information
- Ubisoft's long-running submarine simulator returns to the briny deep of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, offering gamers a series-first opportunity to helm and explore their U-boats from a first-person perspective in Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic. Historically based scenarios find players disrupting Allied supply lines, prowling enemy waters, and engaging their opponents both above and below the water, while a dynamic AI results in constantly evolving tactics and on-the-fly adjustments to the objective-driven campaign. A new user interface has been designed to make the game accessible to newcomers, while still offering the depth of strategy, control, and customization series veterans expect. The new first-person perspective provides submarine enthusiasts with detailed re-creations of German Type VII U-boat interiors, and as gamers explore their vessels, they can witness the fears, tensions, and daily jobs of their crew. The package also includes the documentary film Lost & Found: Legacy of the USS Lagarto.
