The sound on your computer or laptop is controlled by a sound card and sound-card driver software. This sound card may be a standalone card installed in an expansion slot or an onboard card built into the machine’s motherboard. If you need to reinstall or update your sound-card drivers for any reason, you must know what sound-card model your computer or laptop uses.
.Click the Start button and type “Device Manager” in the search box.
.Select “Device Manager” from the search results to launch the Device Manager window.
.Click the arrow icon next to “Sound, video and game controllers.” The menu will extend to display the sound-card information under the header.
.Write down the sound-card model information provided. This is located next to a speaker icon and usually includes the manufacturer’s name and the model number. Use this information to determine which sound-card driver you need.
.Open your Internet browser and navigate to the drivers section of the manufacturer's website. You can usually find this section listed as 'Drivers,' 'Products,' 'Downloads' or 'Support.'
.Select your sound-card model. Different manufacturer websites will prompt you with information specific to the site, but most require that you select your model from a drop-down menu or a list. Once you select your model, you may also need to navigate to a 'Downloads' section on the sound-card information page.
.Save the provided driver file to your computer. This will usually be an executable file that you double-click to launch and install.
